Americans have always been curious about the private lives of public figures. We want to know where they go, how they dress, what forms of entertainment they enjoy and even what books they read.
For example, every year the White House dutifully releases President Barack Obama’s summer vacation reading list. No one knows if Obama actually reads those books. Nor does it matter. (It matters to publishers if they see a spike in sales.)
