Germany wouldn't benefit from replacing the euro with the Deutsche mark in the short run. It would cause a crisis in its biggest export markets and, longer term, worsen its competitive position. But as confidence faded in the single currency, Germans could face sharply rising interest rates. Then they would benefit from reintroducing the DM.
