Higher Education Worldwide

A recent analysis of enrollment in institutions of higher education worldwide by Harvard economist Richard Freeman notes the rapid rise in students in developing countries, and the decline in the U.S. share of worldwide enrollment, from 29 percent of all students in 1970 to 13 percent in 2005. One result of the expansion of higher education overseas is that the U.S. has come to rely extensively on the immigration of highly educated persons to maintain a lead position in science and technology.
