Africa Must Exploit All Energy Sources

In Copenhagen this week, environmentalists have been encouraging Africans to extend their use of solar panels and windmills. Yet such technologies are still too expensive to replace fossil fuels in a significant way. Africans, who bear no responsibility for our current climate crisis and suffer its consequences the most, should not be asked to subsidise green technologies or to slow down their industrial development to combat climate change.

Energy drives economic growth. Without reliable energy, countries struggle to develop: industry cannot operate efficiently; hospitals cannot provide appropriate medical care; children cannot use computers in school or study after dark; and infrastructure cannot be built. Today in sub-Saharan Africa 560m people lack reliable energy "“ and this exacerbates the challenge of poverty. Safeguarding the world for our children is vital but of no use if they still live in poverty and all its debilitating consequences.
