Their nicknames are affectionate and they have long been known as the kindly siblings that help millions of Americans to buy a home. But Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, just like many of their mortgage holders, have fallen on hard times. The government helped out with a multi-billion dollar rescue but now wants them back on their own feet "“ and that is turning out to be the trickiest part of all.
