Want to get a grown up to cheat at work? Just offer him or her a bonus to meet a certain goal, Canadian researchers say.

Paying employees to improve their performance entices cheating, says a new study by Ryerson University and the University of Guelph.

The study is based on an experiment in which 200 students were asked to play a word game and given one of three types of bonuses depending on their performance. Students receiving bonuses for meeting certain pre-set goals were “significantly more” likely to cheat compared to students offered bonuses based on their performance compared with their peers or based on each word created, the study showed.

Of those students offered bonuses for meeting certain goals, the likelihood of cheating increased the closer the student came to meeting a goal.

“The dark side of behavior can be affected by pay-for-performance schemes,” said Fei Song, one of the study’s co-authors. “Faced with certain types of incentives, some people are tempted to make up or misrepresent their performance numbers.”

That is some crack reporting……I have a newsflash for you money at banks entices bank robbers to rob them? I mean holy cow please tell me that everyone knows this. Money (or other object of desire/need/want) entices criminals or the criminally inclined (people who don’t follow rules, care about laws to begin with) to commit fraud/cheat/(insert crime here). Why don’t we just get rid of money all together and there won’t be any crime……Now can we get some real reporting on here, seriously.

Duh, I guess the light just went on in the refregerator. That’s what makes Wall Street such a cesspool of criminality. Gordon Gekko would be proud.
