Here’s a fun bit of political science to ponder on Thursday — sorting the ideological positions of US corporations according to their board members’ donations.

With some rather interesting results for banks.

This is how NYU PhD student Adam Bonica, who blogs at Ideological Cartography, explains his experiment:

The ideological measures include information from all contributions to state and federal candidates as well as contributions to party and ballot committees. Nearly all members of major corporate boards have made political donations in some form of another. Overall, I was able to estimate positions for about 90 percent of board members from their contributions to candidates or party committees between 1992 and 2008…

Overall, this does suggest that corporate political donations in the US are more pragmatic and policy-based than partisan, as Bonica notes — calling time on the idea that Republicans tend to get the corporate vote,  or that corporate funding would flood campaign finance in the wake of the Supreme Court’s Citizen United decision.

With few more pragmatic than US banks, actually. JP Morgan and Bank of America have arbitraged the political system quite a bit in particular.

Except for one bank. Goldman. As the chart shows, its board still leans strongly left this year — thus towards the current incumbents in the executive and legislature — with just a few right-wing hedges.

Which, given that whole unpleasant Abacus business with the Feds before a recent $500m settlement, rather surprises us a bit.
