With Yahoo’s board firing Carol A. Bartz as the onetime Internet giant’s chief executive, the company’s already clouded future just got murkier — and may make it a takeover target once more.
Remember that Ms. Bartz was brought into Yahoo in 2009 after the company’s tortured negotiations with Microsoft over a possible merger. She replaced a Yahoo co-founder, Jerry Yang, whom some analysts had criticized for rebuffing Microsoft’s $44 billion bid.
A well-regarded former head of Autodesk, Ms. Bartz was given the task of finding a new path forward for the onetime titan of the Web. But she failed to redefine Yahoo, which has since been eclipsed by a host of old and new competitors, including Google and Facebook.
