He oversaw the creation of 300,000 jobs, he gave employees shares and increased their salaries in real terms and he transformed competition for groceries, forcing prices down and thereby putting billions more pounds into consumers’ pockets.
So, when he publicly worries that Britain has developed a culture of opposing wealth creation, you might expect him to be taken seriously. Instead, when he spoke about them to this newspaper last weekend, some of the comments were just short of vitriolic.
