Middle-Aged Men Are Suffering in New Economy

By and large, “masculine mystique” acculturates men to be diligent, duty-bound and believing as Joseph Conrad wrote, “A man is a worker. If he is not that he is nothing.” Sadly, some men take this axiom literally. Government data released this year shows suicides now outpace car accidents for cause of death in America; our minds are more deadly than thousands of pounds of hurtling steel. This growing problem is correlated with the economic downturn, tied to a sharp increase in suicides among the middle-aged, especially men.
