Bill Gates may be the richest man alive. But he's not the richest man in history. In fact, he barely makes the top 10.
According to a comparison of wealth across history done by Time, Gates—net worth $78.9 billion—ranked ninth on the list of the richest people of all time, just ahead of Genghis Khan (10th) and just behind Alan Rufus, better known as "Alan the Red" of England, who helped his uncle William the Conqueror in the Norman conquest.
