Aspiring English majors (and their parents): don’t despair! Despite the degree’s bad rap, it’s possible to spend your college years buried in novels and still get a job.

Once the fourth most popular major among American college students in 1970, English language and literature has dropped to number 12, according to an analysis of government data by Flowingthedata, an interactive data site run by Nathan Yau, a statistician and best-selling author. That shift away from an English degree is explained in part by both students and higher education institutions realigning their goals to better fit the job market.
