I wonder sometimes about old Smoot and Hawley. They surely were good men, who did much in their lifetimes. I don't know anything about them other than that they authored the dreadful tariff bill that bears their name. Their entire existence is now boiled down to that one big, obvious, self-inflicted disaster. That our Administration seems hell-bent to repeat.
