The Canadian auto union has launched a boycott of GM cars made in Mexico to try to keep one of the company's plants in Canada open – but all they are proving is that such boycotts are futile. The truth is, few autos are made top-to-bottom in Mexico or any one country. They are broadly sourced, with most North American vehicles made with parts produced in the three NAFTA countries and elsewhere. Trying to boycott any model from any one country is a lot easier said than done.
In fact, auto industry jobs in both Canada and the United States depend on the cost efficiencies that companies can achieve in Mexico – as does the viability of its pension plan and the price of autos available to Canadian and American consumers.
