Fears that the COVID-19 virus might be worse than anticipated prompted a major sell-off in stocks Monday. The Dow Jones Industrial Average shed 3.6%, or 1,031.61 points, its third thousand-point drop in its history.
Other indexes were down by similar amounts. With the market value of all U.S. stocks estimated at over $30 trillion, a loss like this means that roughly $1 trillion in equity disappeared. Poof!
