Being exposed to all the great struggles of human history teaches one perspective and critical thinking skills. It can spark an unquenchable burning curiosity for lifelong learning. Besides colleges are ill equipped to teach a “trade” because as our economy is always changing, so are “trades.” Perhaps you have read some of my articles on the University of Richmond. If not, here are the Cliff Notes version. My family were great benefactors of the University of Richmond. The law school was named after my great, great grandfather, T. C. Williams. Last September, I received a call from the University’s president telling me that the Board of Trustees had decided to “dename” the law school. Well, that got my dander up. I had never paid much attention to the University of Richmond, even though I went to law school there. I knew it was considered a “Junior Ivy,” it was one of the most well-endowed and perhaps one of the prettiest campuses in the country. I assumed it was still an outstanding liberal arts school. Well once it dishonored my family, I started paying attention.
