At a time when we are slowly coming out of a year’s long housing shortage, it is unfortunate that the U.S. Justice Department has brought an antitrust lawsuit against RealPage, Inc. The lawsuit, in a nutshell, claims that RealPage’s proprietary software is being used to set prices in the multi-family unit rental market and causing rental prices to go up. The Justice Department is concerned rental managers representing some 16 million units are sharing pricing information; another 3 million are using RealPage’s Yield Star and AI Revenue Management (AIRM) algorithm driven software to set rental prices.
