On Tuesday, Canada's finance minister stood in front of cameras in Ottawa and said something that sounded like defiance. "We chose Canada," François-Philippe Champagne announced, unveiling tariffs of up to 50 percent on roughly $20 billion worth of American goods, covering more than seven hundred products, from steel and dairy to appliances and furniture. The move matches, dollar for dollar, the 50 percent tariffs the Trump administration had already placed on about $28 billion of Canadian goods after trade talks between Washington and Ottawa collapsed. President Trump answered on social media by threatening to rename Lake Ontario "Lake America." It would be funny if the stakes were not so real for workers on both sides of the border.
