When Republicans might as well be Democrats, what’s the point of having Republicans?
Or voting for them?
Well, some of them.
GOP Rep. Patrick McHenry, for instance. He is the new chairman of the House Financial Services Committee - which you’d think would be concerned with . . . financial services. Instead, McHenry is very concerned about Diversity, Inclusion and Equity - neatly acronymized as DIE. Which is precisely what will happen to the Republican Party if its representatives don't stop working overtime to show how very much they agree with everything the Democratic Left is pushing.
Such as what another Republican who might as well be a Democrat, GOP Rep. Ann Wagner of Missouri, says the Subcommittee on Capital Markets will focus on under her "leadership."
That being what she calls the “best practices and policies that continue to strengthen diversity and inclusion in the capital markets industry.” Meaning, rather than leave the market for capital free to decide the best uses of capital according to whether there is a market - and a good prospect for a return on the investment of that capital - the government ought to interfere with the market and allocate capital according to racial and other considerations having nothing to do with whether it makes sound financial sense.
Basically, affirmative action for money.
The premise being it is unfair that some have it while others do not - and the not-having is due to “institutional racism” rather than institutional investors putting their money where it’s perceived as likely to earn more of it.
Banks lend to people whom they deem likely to be capable of paying it back - based upon metrics such as having an income adequate to make payments and a track record of having made payments in the past. This is called having good credit - but that is probably “racist” now, too.
Clearly, more inclusionary policies are needed. Such as requiring institutional lenders to “invest” in diversity. That being defined as people and ventures that aren't likely to generate money. It may not make a profit, but what matters - apparently - is making Democrats happy.
Of course, they never are - no matter how many Republicans-in-name-only such as McHenry and Wagner roll over and beg to be kicked by them. And never mind that the Republican Congress just elected was not elected to push Democrat policies. The Republican National Committee seems to understand this, even if some Republicans do not. It stated - accurately - that "Democrats prioritize wokeness over solving real problems."
Like inflation that's costing Americans of all colors 8-12 percent more to maintain the same standard of living as two years ago. Like violent crime soaring 50 percent - and higher - and almost all of that in . . . diverse neighborhoods. There's a real"disparate impact" there - but never mind. The Left - and some Republicans, who serve the agenda of the Left - only seems to care about preening before the perpetually aggrieved, in the hope that they will be patted on the head for signaling their virtue.
It's what makes Republicans-in-name-only such as Mitt Romney so popular . . . with Democrats - who never vote for him but are happy to help him repel Republican voters who might otherwise have bothered to vote. When there is something worth voting for.
It's how we ended up with Barack Obama, who bequeathed America Joe Biden.
Another member of this club is Rep. Bill Huizenga of Michigan - who is doing his very best impression of the woke Leftist Governor of Michigan, Gretchen Whitmer, were she the head of the Subcommittee on Oversight and Investigations. The committee that ought to be investigating the actions and activities of Democrats - which is what Republicans were voted into Congress to do. But Huizenga is about making sure there is "agency" and what he calls a "programmatic commitment" to . . . diversity and inclusion policies.
What either have to do with oversight and investigation is hard to divine.
Easier to understand is how badly some Republicans want to be seen as good Democrats - because Washington is a Democrat-controlled town, even if Republicans now control the House. Bad Republicans - i.e., those who don't roll over for Democrats - aren't invited to all the right parties. And of course, the legacy media is almost entirely under the sway of the Woke Left - and only well-trained "house" Republicans such as what the Washington Free Beacon cheekily labeled the Diversity Triumvirate are allowed within (and on-air).
It only took McHenry a couple of weeks to get the message.
Shortly after his appointment to head the Financial Services Committee, he was talking about how "Democrats wasted the valuable and limited time and resources of our committee to push burdensome mandates on American job creators" and that he would see to it that there would be "aggressive oversight" of the Biden Administration. He even dissolved the Subcommittee on Diversity and Inclusion created by Democratic Rep. Maxine Waters, who doesn't identify as a Republican.
Fast forward just three weeks and it's time to DIE - which is precisely what will happen to the Republican party if it doesn't stop groveling for the favor of the Democrat Party and the Democratic Establishment in Washington that also controls the legacy media.
Companies that have gone Woke have gone broke.
The GOP will go away, if it doesn't wake up.
