Even before he became pope, Jorge Mario Bergoglio was known as an outspoken champion of the poor, and for his ostentatious lack of ostentation. When he picked the name Francis – alluding primarily to Francis of Assisi and his vows of apostolic poverty – he made another strong statement. He added to his record on May 2nd, by tweeting from his nine papal Twitter accounts these 115 characters:

My thoughts turn to all who are unemployed, often as a result of a self-centred mindset bent on profit at any cost.
