Oscar Handlin won the 1952 Pulitzer Prize for The Uprooted, a lyrical saga of the hardships endured by immigrants to America.

Its most important words appeared in the introduction: “Once I thought to write a history of the immigrants in America. Then I discovered that the immigrants were American history.”
