I recommend Big Balls to take over the presidency of the University of Virginia now that Jim Ryan has effectively been defrocked.

Please don’t believe the self-serving nonsense the mainstream media is driveling about the Trump administration dictating academic conformity at the University of Virginia and the whole “see Trump is a dictator” nonsense.

The DOJ has reported that Ryan repeatedly lied about UVA dismantling its DEI program. Gee, what a surprise! He was openly violating federal law, Virginia law, and the dictates of the Supreme Court. Too cool for school—instead of dismantling DEI, he just renamed the office and titles of the purveyors of this malodorous policy. Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon stated that the DOJ did not demand his resignation, but was frustrated with his hostile duplicity and refusal to comply with the law. She further stated:

“It isn't just Students for Fair Admissions. It's Title VII. It's Title IX. It's Title VI.”

“I sent a sheaf of letters simply asking them to confirm compliance with Students for Fair Admissions… They didn’t. They haven’t. And to date, they still haven’t—almost three months later.”

“I haven’t gotten anything in writing from UVA. They just didn’t respond at all. They’ve asked for extensions and extensions and extensions.”

Jim Ryan is a charter member of the Left-Wing Lying Weasel Club. You know the type: a clever semanticist who says things in a smooth, reassuring fashion that sounds good to those with little knowledge or critical thinking skills. Such utterances mollify the feel-gooders, the empaths, and the mush-for-brains crowd who seem to be the first to cry foul, in unison, when their political lords tell them what to say.

Jim Ryan looks good, he’s excellent at self-promotion, but if one dives just one inch below the surface of his handsome demeanor and smooth rhetoric, up pops the weasel! Not only is he a liar, but a dangerous Marxist radical. Ryan is just as fervent and passionate toward Neo-Marxism as John Wesley was toward Methodism. The only difference: Ryan’s duplicity. He hid his fervor to pull the wool over the eyes of the docile sheep awed by his ability to seem moderate, purposefully hiding his behind-the-scenes execution of his radical agenda. This duplicitousness is a special, indeed dominant, skill of the Left. Why can’t they just be honest about their intentions? Why must they “snake oil” everything? The agenda is to conceal their true intentions because nobody would buy their product if they were honest. For years, Ryan deconstructed the University of Virginia’s history of free expression and Jeffersonian enlightenment to create a “critical theory” indoctrination center. The University became a re-education camp to “stamp out” the old classical thinking and impose the new tenets of the Revolution. Ryan’s “thought police” enforced his code of ideological conformity. Think what we tell you, or the mob (our agents) will hurt you! Lenin’s Cheka comes to mind.

I know what some of y’all are thinking. Oh, come on Smith, Ryan was not a Marxist. Sure, he didn’t walk around like Che Guevara in a red beret and combat boots, but he pushed a cancerous ideology that shares the same foundation as Marxism and, while seemingly more benign, if left unchecked leads to the same disastrous results. As I explained in a recent article, “Marxism Rears Its Envious Head at Thomas Jefferson's University,” the underpinnings of Marxism are as old as human nature, and every element of our Judeo-Christian ethic teaches us to overcome and reject this aspect of our fallen nature. Moreover, if one understands history, one knows how easily this toxic political stew leads to monumental death and destruction. It is indeed a cancer with a voracious appetite. If not excised, it destroys everything. Thus, even a fairly benign tumor must be taken very seriously. The moniker “DEI” is the proverbial “lipstick on the pig.” It has always been this way. To sell this toxic creed, one must give it a pretty-sounding name. When Satan convinces one to do his dirty work, he too wraps his request in pretty packaging and bows.

Most of the soft-headed mushy-brains crowd have never looked under the hood of what is really being taught at places like the University of Virginia. Marxist pedagogy is real, and it is pervasive on American campuses. It is a specific teaching philosophy emanating from the Frankfurt School and has been instilled into academia for the past 100 years.

Ryan became president in 2018. Early on, many of us concerned alumni caught on to how Ryan was deliberately destroying the University of Virginia. In 2020, the Jefferson Council was formed to combat Ryan’s breakneck radicalization of our beloved school. The current narrative that suddenly this “good man” was deposed by the Trump administration is a crock of horse manure. This past Saturday, Ryan sent out a self-serving email painting himself a victim, yet there has been a concentrated and boisterous effort among alumni to get rid of Ryan for at least five years. Just as all totalitarian governments control the media, Ryan controlled the UVA alumni email lists and all the resources of one of the wealthiest universities in the nation to spread his forked-tongue disinformation. Like Pravda and Izvestia, he could paint a beautiful Potemkin Village, but of course fail to inform the reader of all those dissenting voices rotting in the gulag.

In early March 2024, the nation was shocked when Open the Books discovered that UVA was spending $20 million plus on its DEI department, paying outrageous salaries to wild-eyed leftist radicals. But to those of us who “looked under the hood,” this was just the tip of the iceberg. Ryan hired all the new deans and controlled the department heads. He initiated a mandatory DEI loyalty oath, an ideological affirmation that any employee at the University had to uphold and believe in DEI principles. To be hired, one even had to write essays affirming their belief in DEI. The Nazis called this pledge a “fühereid.” The common Soviet term for these ideological pledges was “partiinaya klyatva.” It is my understanding that even cooks and groundskeepers had to sign the “party pledge.” Under Ryan, the University founded by Thomas Jefferson, the world's foremost advocate of free expression, told TEACHERS WHAT THEY MUST THINK! Students were pressured into signing so-called “voluntary” pledges. In the law we call these contracts of adhesion.

My brother Walter sues the University almost every week under Virginia’s FOIA statutes. Ryan does everything he can to obstruct these legitimate efforts to find out how he is spending the University’s money. It is absolutely shocking the money the University wastes promoting leftist causes, funneling money to ideological friends, and the efforts it takes to conceal these payments. Just one example of Ryan’s rigid conformity to his Marxist agenda is that a number of students have sued the University for its ideological oppression and violation of civil rights. Instead of just admitting it was wrong and saying “I’m sorry,” it has spent a mind-blowing amount of money in legal fees and settlements, all the while never altering its demands for ideological purity.

The University establishment is nothing more than a self-preservation guild. Ninety-four percent of faculty political donations go to Democrats. Just like big city mayors, Ryan’s allegiance is to bolster the pecuniary interests of employees, paying huge salaries and supporting all harebrained funding requests from the "94%." The students be damned! In 1978, a 17-year-old kid could work a regular summer job and pay his tuition at the University. Now, the same student often graduates with tens or even hundreds of thousands of dollars of student loan debt. The faculty live in their country dachas, while the students are consigned to the bread lines. Sound familiar?

The University needs a president who is not part of the system, indeed a president who is adverse to the system and is itching to fire the lazy, unnecessary horde of entitled academics and to expose the waste and self-dealing. A fella who has a big sharp knife and not afraid to use it.

Big Balls is the man for the job!
